Please email or call Anne Neal if you can go: 410-913-3344 STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!! Central Baltimore County Democratic Club Endorses Passage of 3 Key Legislative Initiatives Towson, MD (February 20, 2013)---Members of The Central Baltimore Democratic Club (CBCDC) voted to endorse three key legislative initiatives at its recent meeting, according to Anne C. Neal, president. The club voted its overwhelming endorsement of: · the Baltimore County School Board becoming a hybrid system---some members appointed and some members elected; · the repeal of the death penalty in Maryland; · support of the Maryland Wind Energy Bill; · support of the gun violence prevention legislation. According to Neal, " The CCBDC has a solid history of supporting local as well as statewide issues and I think the members demonstrated this once again with their strong endorsements of these key legislative initiatives. Specifically, our votes say we want the residents of Baltimore County to have more say in the education of their children; that we want sustainable energy as a strategy to do less harm to our environment; that we want our loved ones to be free from gun violence and that we want to eliminate the possibility that the State of Maryland will execute an innocent man or woman." Email your legislators and urge them to vote in favor of DEATH PENALTY REPEAL in Maryland Thank Senator Bobby Zirkin for his support of repeal! Gun Violence Prevention Update ..... Many members requested information on how you can help support violence prevention legislation. If you can help with canvassing or can attend the rally, please email or call Anne Neal if you can attend. (contact info above) On Wednesday, 2/6/13, testimony was presented before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, in Annapolis, that clearly reviews measures we need to consider to advocate gun violence prevention in our State. Despite the fact that Maryland is currently one of the Top Ten States with the strongest gun laws, it does not even appear on the list of Top Ten States with the lowest gun death rates. We need to strengthen our laws even further to address this anomaly. After you review the linked testimony, we would urge you to access the “Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence” website and email your area representatives for their support. This is the most expeditious action we can take right now and it provides an easy way to make our voices heard. The full Senate Bill 281, and associated proposed legislation (SB 266 and SB 540), is accessible under the legislation tab of the site for your reference. We are only concentrating on the gun violence prevention components at this time as the mental health elements will need separate focus and review. http://marylanderstopreventgunviolence.org/ Also, there is a “Rally to Prevent Gun Violence” taking place on 3/1/2013 in Annapolis just prior to the first hearings on the bill. Bus transportation information will be available on the website shortly. This is our time to be heard and visibly present. |
